January 28, 2005 The Honorable Edward M. Kennedy United States Senate 315 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510-0001 RE: Support of Cape Wind Project To whom it may concern: I would like to add my strong encouragement to the Cape Wind Project and related wind efforts. The perils of fossil fuel usage and dependence on foreign oil make projects such as Cape Wind so very important for our environment, economy, and national security. * Less pollution. Any clear day on the cape exposes the plume of smog emitted by the oil fired electric plant in Sandwich. The oil spill in Buzzards Bay in 2003 was cargo bound for the plant as well. * Local energy production. With Cape Wind, the surrounding areas will be producing most of their power on site. Local production will not be attenuated by the 30% penalties of range distribution lines. * Groundbreaking initiative. Wind turbine farms are prevalent in European coastal areas but have yet to be accepted by the American public. I see the Cape Wind project as opening people's eyes to the prospect of additional farms and facilitating their installation. * Economic Independence. We are more reliant on foreign oil production than at any other point in our history. Remembering the 1970s, we can get a feeling about what impact an oil shock would have on our economy. Energy independence results in economic autonomy, further increasing the important of projects such as Cape Wind. * National Security. Part of the cost of foreign oil finances Saudi Arabian religious schools all around the world that spread a fanatical variant of Islam that sees legitimacy in terrorism. Saudi Arabia takes in $80 billion a year in oil money and 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 and Bin Laden come from there. We must understand that oil in cars, homes, and power generation facilities indirectly sponsors global terrorism. So in the name of public interest I beg you to support this project. If there is anything I can do to help the effort, please let me know. Sincerely, Gray Watson
